Case Study: Supporting A Welsh NHS Trust To Secure Developer Contract Resource

A Welsh NHS Trust was facing significant challenges in recruiting for several roles within their development team. The Trust learned about VIQU IT’s NHS IT Volunteer Initiative from another NHS Trust based in Cardiff, which we had successfully supported through the scheme. We were recommended as a trusted recruitment agency that understood how to secure IT professionals in hard-to-fill roles, as well as how to navigate public sector frameworks.
The client's challenge...
This Trust faced specific challenges in hiring IT contractors skilled in software development and engineering. The organisation found it difficult to attract contractors with the development skills they required, as they were unable to offer competitive rates compared with private companies offering comparable contracts. Additionally, the work they required contractors for involved covering business-as-usual tasks, with no opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects, making the roles less attractive.
The Trust had several requirements across development, including Xamarin Developers, Power BI Developers, and C# Developers, that needed to be filled so the organisation could stay on top of their existing projects.
Our actions…
During the pandemic and in the period after it, this Trust was able to take advantage of both our NHS IT Volunteer Initiative and a subsequent scheme we ran to offer further support to public sector organisations, through which we successfully filled their IT requirements.
During our partnership with this Welsh Trust, our team:
- Visited the organisation in Wales to gain better insights into the team and culture, in order to communicate more effectively with candidates.
- Identified contractors whose values aligned with the Trust and were located close by, meaning they were open to working for a less competitive rate.
- Supported the team through recruitment, contract renewals, and, eventually, a contract-to-permanent transition for one of the contractors.
The outcomes...
During our time working with this Trust, we placed five developers in contract roles across their tech team. This included one contractor who, after successfully working with the Trust for 3.5 years, transitioned into a permanent role, with our support.
While sourcing suitable development contractor talent for these five roles, we achieved an interview ratio of three candidates to one interview, and all developers were placed within an average of two weeks.
"It was incredibly rewarding to continue our support for NHS Trusts..."
We’re very proud of the part we played in helping the NHS and other public sector organisations during and immediately after the COVID-19 pandemic.
