A Welsh public sector organisation was at risk of delaying a vital digital transformation project with a fixed deadline, due to challenges in securing key IT contractor talent.

The client's challenge...

A Wales-based public sector organisation had been working with a well-known high-volume recruitment agency to fill their Power Apps Developer contract role. The agency had several challenges in sourcing for the role because the rate being offered was not competitive for the skillset required. It was also determined to be an Inside IR35 contract, which made it a less attractive prospect for some contractors.

However, these issues could have been navigated more effectively if the previous agency had the right processes and network available. After a couple of months of ongoing difficulties in securing a suitable contractor, the organisation began seeking recommendations for a new recruitment partner with Wales-based IT recruitment experience.

We were recommended to the organisation by a procurement manager at another Welsh public sector organisation, where we have previously assisted extensively to secure the right hires for a number of challenging roles. The procurement manager had close ties to the team and told them that VIQU IT was a trusted tech recruitment agency that regularly delivers IT recruitment in Wales, specialising in both contract and permanent hires.

Our actions....

The organisation chose to engage our team. We worked extensively to understand and qualify the role in order to identify contractors who would be a great fit for the organisation’s project team.

Our key actions included:

  • Immediately qualifying the role and visiting the public sector organisation team on-site in Wales
  • Taking on board detailed feedback from the organisation as we presented candidates and using that knowledge to refine our candidate search
  • Supporting the client during a lengthy onboarding process that caused delays in the contractor’s start date, including suggesting to engage a temporary contractor until the hired contractor could start
  • Ensuring full compliance within the framework and followed procedures

The outcomes…

As a result of our actions, we successfully placed a fantastic candidate within just two weeks, preventing further delays to the critical transformation project. Being a Crown Commercial Service supplier listed on the RM6277 framework meant we faced fewer hurdles, which helped us deliver a fast solution for the organisation.

After successfully hiring for the Power Apps Developer role, we have since filled 5 more contract roles within the digital transformation project and the organisation’s wider IT team. On two occasions, the hiring team was so impressed with the candidates presented to them that they worked out a budget to take on more contractor resource than initially requested.

Our efforts in securing great talent for this organisation have enabled a high-pressure and prominent project to continue with minimal disruption and remain on track to meet its deadline. In total, we have made 8 placements from 6 roles initially provided.

"It was incredibly rewarding to play a key role in ensuring the timely delivery of a critical public sector digital transformation project..."

I am really proud of the fact that we have been able to secure great new contractors for this organisation within weeks. I believe this demonstrates the deep knowledge we have of tech contractors within Wales and our experience navigating public sector recruitment frameworks.
